How to Reduce Your Risk of COVID

COVID cases are widespread currently.  You can reduce your risk by avoiding crowded gatherings, using azelastine nasal spray as a preventative, or doing a sinus-rinse kit to reduce your risk of infection after being out in public.

COVID Vaccine Information and Recommendations

We do recommend receiving this year's COVID booster. As previously mentioned, we recommend either the non-mRNA option called Nuvaxovid (previously Novavax) or the new vaccine by Moderna called mNEXSPIKE. The decision is up to each patient's preference - keep reading for more information on the two.

Nuvaxovid is the traditionally made, non-mRNA COVID vaccine. We recommend this option since its immunity is thought to last longer than the mRNA vaccines, and it causes fewer and milder side effects in the first 48 hours. Ladue should be receiving a small stock of Nuvaxovid today. Barring any delivery issues, they will have this available at the clinics this week.

For those who would like to stick with Moderna, we also recommend mNEXSPIKE over Spikevax as it has been found to be more effective than Spikevax. Additionally, since mNEXSPIKE targets specific parts of the spike protein rather than the whole protein, it requires a smaller mRNA dose.

Other Fall Vaccine Recommendations

As a reminder, flu shots are available yearly for all ages.

For those 50 and older, it's recommended that you receive a two-shot series of Shingrix, which helps prevent Shingles.

In addition, the CDC recently lowered the eligible age for pneumonia vaccines to anyone 50 years or older. This is a one or two-shot series depending on which vaccines you receive.

Finally, RSV is a one-time shot recommended for those 75 or older and those 60-74 years old who are at increased risk. You do need a prescription for the RSV vaccine, so please call our office before scheduling for this vaccine.

If you are unsure whether you need one of these vaccines, you may call our office at 314-993-1200.
